Patients ask me some version of this every week: how do I make my Botox last longer? I understand the question. But the most honest answer is that Botox is temporary by design — and that timeline is not a failure of the treatment. It is how the treatment works.
BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA-approved to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe forehead lines, crow's feet lines, and frown lines in adults. It works by reducing targeted muscle activity, which softens the repeated movement that folds the skin. The FDA-approved prescribing information describes the duration of effect for glabellar lines as approximately three to four months.
Botox works on movement. Skincare supports the look of the skin in the areas where movement shows.
Why results seem to fade faster than expected
Duration varies, and several things influence it: muscle strength, dose, placement, the area treated, metabolism, treatment cadence, and your provider's technique. But there is another explanation people often miss. Sometimes Botox has not fully worn off — the skin simply looks less smooth because of dryness, texture, or fine lines visible at rest. That is a different problem, and more Botox is not always the answer.
So the question is not how to make Botox last forever. But rather, what actually helps those areas look smoother, fresher, and better maintained between appointments? That answer is more precise — and more useful.
